Klonoa is an excellent but often overlooked platformer series. Klonoa: Door to Phantomile was an excellent initial entry for the Sony PlayStation despite it not being a 3-D adventure game which was popular back in 1997 when it was released. A followup sequel was released in 2001, Klonoa 2: Lunatea’s Veil for the PlayStation 2 system. Both games were received very well by the video game reviewing community, but were never huge hits at retail. Bandai Namco who currently holds the rights to the Klonoa property, are attempting to cash in by releasing a collection, Klonoa Phantasy Reverie Series.
Consisting of remasters of the first two games in the series, this collection looks beautiful on any of the modern platforms where you might have access. Touting 60 frames per second and up to 4K resolution, this seems like an immediate buy. Unfortunately, the two Game Boy Advance games are missing from this collection entirely, which is a shame given how expensive these portable entries have become on the secondary market. Still, Bandai Namco has released this colorful collection in Japan, Asia, and Europe in a physical format. Yes, you read that correctly, there are no plans for a physical release in the North American region.
While this is disappointing, there is still something to be said for importing this from overseas, as all versions feature English language support. It still begs the question, “Did Bandai Namco just have no faith for Klonoa in the west?” I would pick this one up sooner than later, as Klonoa games are not known for their huge print runs, and it doesn’t look like any of the limited printed companies are getting access to the title anytime soon. You can pickup your physical copy of Klonoa Phantasy Reverie Series for Nintendo Switch, PS4, PS5, and Xbox from Play-Asia’s website.
