Modern Rarities - The Hunter: Call of the Wild 2019 Edition
This hunting sequel is getting harder to find by the minute for PlayStation 4
Modern video game collecting is going to be crazy later on down the line. There are over 3000 physical releases (and counting) for the PlayStation 4 system according to Pricecharting.com. Sifting through and predicting what mainstream releases will be considered “rare” for a system with a library this massive is almost impossible. With this “Modern Rarities” series, we will examine games that have come out within the past generation that have had their prices spiked for one reason or another.
Avalanche Studios the developer of the hit series Just Cause also released a hunting game series called “The Hunter” which started as a PC game back in 2009. Eventually additional sequels were released on the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One consoles. There are two physical releases: “The Hunter: Call of the Wild” and “The Hunter: Call of the Wild 2019 Edition”. It is easy to get them confused, as they have almost the same exact cover artwork. In fact, they are almost the same game, with just some minor differences. The 2019 edition contains all content from The Hunter: Call of the Wild, but adds in two additional hunting areas: savannah and frozen tundra landscapes. There also are some extra weapon packs included in this edition as well. This content is all included on the 2019 disc, no additional download voucher was included.
There is no doubt that The Hunter: Call of the Wild was successful enough for Avalanche Studios to warrant an additional 2019 release with updated content. However, the print run must have been reduced, as it has limited availability on the second hand market. It seems that the 2019 version is the “definitive edition” of the game, allowing the player to experience everything that the game has to offer. Despite this, the value of the Xbox One version is not as high as the PlayStation 4 disc. This could be that Xbox One collecting is not as prominent as it is with their rival, or it could have received a higher print run (unlikely). Whatever the case may be, the PlayStation 4 listings do not lie, this game is more expensive on the Sony console.
Being published by THQ Nordic, there is always a possibility of a reprint in the future for The Hunter: Call of the Wild 2019: Edition, but I do not see enough demand warranting this. If you are serious about PlayStation 4 collecting, you may want to consider tracking this one down sooner than later. It always seems as though the oddball releases tend to become more expensive over time! PlayStation 4 collectors need to be aware of this title and keep it on their radar. Let me know in the comments below if you have this one in your collection, or plan on grabbing it in the future. Stay tuned for more in our “Modern Rarities” series coming soon!
