If you are not familiar with Retro-bit, they are a video game accessory company that specializes in manufacturing peripherals for classic video game systems. They are known for having a good quality product at a great price point. Previously, the company has released the Sega Genesis 6-button 2.4 GHz Wireless Controller which has a nearly identical form factor to the original wired 6-button controllers released back in the early 90s. They are a direct partner with Sega, which makes their controllers an officially licensed Sega product.
Big 6 Wired Controller
Retro-bit has recently released a new line of official Sega Genesis controllers dubbed “Big6” which features a six button Sega Genesis controller, but in the original 3-button form factor. Compared to the original 3-button model, these feel almost identical. The three X, Y, & Z buttons are the smaller buttons found in the original 6-button variation, but the Start button is flush with the controller mold, unlike the original which is raised.
The Big6 wired controller boasts a generous 10 foot cable, allowing for gaming on the couch to be a cinch, without needing an extension. On the back, you will notice that Retro-bit opted for a sticker for their logo, instead of built into the plastic mold like the original. The Big6 wired controller is compatible with any Sega Genesis system.
Big 6 2.4GHz Wireless Controller
In addition to a wired controller, Retro-bit has also released a wireless version of the product. Featuring a similar form factor, this controller has a rechargeable battery with USB-C charging port. Also included is a USB-C charging cable, two dongles, and an instruction manual. The two wireless dongles that are included are a standard Sega Genesis controller port, and one with a USB port. This allows for not only connecting to your favorite Sega Genesis console, but also for other platforms such as the Nintendo Switch or a PC / Mac computer. Connecting this controller was very easy, all you need to do is press Start on your wireless controller and it will go into pairing mode where you will see a flashing light on top of the controller itself. From there, just hold the button on the respective dongle until the lights stop flashing. I was hooked up and ready to go in literal seconds. The bottom of the controller also sports two additional buttons “Home” and “Select” for use on other consoles. On the top, an “L” and “R” buttons have been added for other consoles as well.
Playtest
I called in some reinforcements for this one, as I knew only one other person would appreciate a product like this. My brother Sean who is a Sega Genesis enthusiast would help me put these two controllers through the wringer.
We first tested with Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and immediately tested all of the buttons, none of which felt “mushy” or of low quality. Response time was very accurate, not showing any lag whatsoever, even on the wireless controller.
Next up, we tried both Super Street Fighter II and Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 where we were able to execute complex moves with ease on each of the models of the Big6 controllers. With the Big6 wireless controller, I was able to move several feet away from the dongle with no drop in signal range.
If I had to pick out a single flaw, it would be the lack of a “Mode” button on the wireless controller. The Big6 wired controller features the “Mode” button to switch between a 3-button and 6-button configuration. Some games require this button to be pressed (Looking at you Golden Axe II) to flip back to the classic 3-button setup. On the Big6 wireless controller, this Mode button does not exist, but rather you need to hold down Start+B to flip to this mode. However, with that being said this is such a small percentage of the Sega Genesis software library, that this essentially a non-issue.
Final Verdict
5/5
The Big6 controllers from Retro-bit are sure-fire winners for any retro gamer, but are extra special for Sega purists. Having the original classic 3-button form factor but with a 6-button layout is a perfect match. I am always surprised when an accessory has the potential of being potentially better than the original OEM controller. For the quality you receive, the price point on these are incredible. The Big6 wired controller has a suggested price of $16.99, and the Big6 2.4 GHz wireless controller retails for $34.99. Overall these are excellent officially licensed products that any Sega fan should not miss!
