Up Close And Personal - Cathedral
An in-depth look at one of the nicest physical releases by Premium Edition Games
Cathedral is a wonderful Metroid-vania title by Decemberborn Interactive, a Swedish indie developer. It’s with great luck that the rights to publish Cathedral ended up in the hands of Premium Edition Games, as they always seem to go the extra mile when it comes to their physical releases. This particular entry is number 7 in their line of physical Nintendo Switch releases. Since I was so impressed by the packaging for what is deemed to be a “standard edition”, I felt that it should be cataloged appropriately. Let’s take a look!
Slipcover
Right away when handling Cathedral, you can tell this is not your normal Nintendo Switch release. The slipcover for Cathedral features a heavy-duty card stock featuring a glossy finish all around. It features reflective and metallic-like printing around the Cathedral logo, the Premium Edition logo, and the number 07 on the back of the slipcover. Artwork is also featured on the spines, with it being different on each side.
Sleeve
This Nintendo NES era “dust jacket” sleeve features artwork from the game Cathedral on both sides. On the spine (not shown) it features the number 07, the seventh release by Premium Edition Games.
Case
The case is a standard Nintendo Switch case and displays beautiful artwork for Cathedral on the front, and has additional artwork and four screenshots of gameplay on the back of the case.
Insert
The insert has incredible art of the world of Cathedral that is put on display when you open the inside of the game case. It is important to note that since this is a North American release, the text “Cathedral” is aligned to the left on the spine.
Cartridge
The cartridge for Cathedral features similar artwork as the cover insert, ESRB rating of E-10+, the Premium Edition logo, and the product code of LA-H-AZ3RB-USA.
Instruction Manual
This is my favorite part of this release. Cathedral comes with an instruction manual that contains a whopping 43 pages of knowledge for you to research. Each page is printed in full color and features maps, information about various levels, enemies, and more. It even features a couple classic “memo” pages at the end, similar to a manual of an Nintendo NES video game. The front and back cover of the Cathedral instruction manual has the metallic-like printing that is also found on the slipcover of the packaging.
Challenge Card
The Premium Edition Games Challenge Card features the Cathedral logo and gameplay battling the enemy known as the Necromancer. On the back, the instructions on how to complete the challenge and how to earn and receive your collector’s patch are found.
Premium Edition Games never fails to impress me, with their consistent attention to detail on all of their releases. Cathedral is more than worthy of a physical release, and hiring Premium Edition Games was definitely the way to go for Decemberborn Interactive to showcase their excellent video game. Copies of Cathedral both standard and retro edition are still available as of this post on the Premium Edition Games website.
